About the indicator

Carbon dioxide emissions from burning oil and petroleum products. Most of it comes from transport, and that makes this the most inert of the three fuel series: a power plant can be replaced within years, while a vehicle fleet turns over in a decade and a half. This is exactly why the shift to electric cars shows up in emissions with a long lag behind the share of electric cars in sales.

Important: Includes petrochemical feedstock burned as fuel, but not plastic: carbon that stays in products does not enter emissions until the products themselves are burned.
