About the indicator

The yield of cereal crops in kilograms per hectare of harvested area. The gap between countries reaches tenfold and is explained by climate, varieties, fertilizer application and the level of farming technique. Rising yields are the main source of the growth in world food production, with the area under cereals almost unchanged.

Important: The aggregate is weighted by the land under cereal production: it is the whole harvest of the group divided by all of its harvested area. Yield depends not only on technology but also on climate and on the mix of crops grown.
