Graphite is the third material of the battery trio after lithium and cobalt, and by weight an anode needs more of it than a cathode needs lithium. As in the other two cases, production is concentrated: most of it comes from China, which also processes the graphite mined in other countries, making dependence even greater than production figures show.
Important: Natural graphite only. Synthetic graphite, which is made from petroleum coke and is also used for anodes, is not part of this series.
