Annual estimates of metal and mineral production by country, which the U.S. Geological Survey has prepared since the early twentieth century and which remain the main open source on the industry. For most commodities production is concentrated in a handful of countries, so the tables hold a dozen territories rather than two hundred: that is how the industry itself is arranged, not how the data were sampled.
