About the indicator

Natural graphite production, from U.S. Geological Survey data. Graphite is the third material of the battery trio after lithium and cobalt, and by weight an anode needs more of it than a cathode needs lithium. As in the other two cases, production is concentrated: most of it comes from China, which also processes the graphite mined in other countries, making dependence even greater than production figures show.

Important: Natural graphite only. Synthetic graphite, which is made from petroleum coke and is also used for anodes, is not part of this series.
