The same indicator for neighboring countries — with links to their pages
Electricity imports minus exports over the year. The figure can be negative, and the sign is the main thing here: positive means that a country buys more than it sells, negative that it is a supplier for its neighbors. Electricity can only be traded over wires, so the trade is always regional: the large flows run inside Europe, between the United States and Canada, and from Paraguay to Brazil. For power systems with a large share of solar and wind, links with neighbors are a way to smooth out the variability of generation.
Important: Negative values belong to exporters. The sum over a group of countries gives its net position: trade inside the group cancels out, so the world total is close to zero — that is a property of the figure, not an error.
