The probability that a person who has reached the age of 30 will die before 70 from one of four groups of noncommunicable diseases: cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory disease. This is not the share of those who died but a calculated risk based on current age-specific mortality rates. The indicator belongs to the Sustainable Development Goals as the principal measure of the burden of noncommunicable diseases, because it takes precisely premature mortality — death before the age that is considered expected.
Important: Four groups of diseases, not all noncommunicable ones: that is how SDG target 3.4 is set. The age range 30–70 is chosen in order to separate premature mortality from mortality in old age.
