About the indicator

A composite assessment of the quality of a country's logistics on a scale from one to five: the work of customs, the state of infrastructure, the availability of shipping, the quality of services, the tracking of consignments and the timeliness of delivery. It is collected by a survey of international freight forwarders — that is, it reflects the experience of those who move the cargo, not the reporting of government agencies. The indicator does much to explain why, at comparable rates and distances, the cost of delivery differs several times over between countries.

Important: A survey-based assessment, not a measurement. It is published once every two or three years, so the years are intermittent. The aggregate for groups of countries is weighted by merchandise exports: a country's weight in world logistics is set by the volume of its freight flow.
