About the indicator

The share of fuel — oil, gas, coal and the products of their refining — in a country's merchandise exports. This is the most direct measure of commodity dependence: for a dozen states the share exceeds ninety percent, meaning that all other exports together take up less than a tenth. A high value speaks not of wealth but of fragility: the revenue of such a country moves with the price of a single commodity, over which it has no influence.

Important: The share is of merchandise exports, not of all exports: services do not enter the denominator. The aggregate for country groups is weighted by merchandise exports — the denominator of the indicator itself.
