About the indicator

The share of agricultural raw materials in merchandise exports: cotton, natural rubber, rough timber, hides, wool, silk. The category is kept apart from food because this is an input to industry rather than to consumption: a country that ships out cotton and brings in fabric depends on foreign processing just as an ore supplier does. This series shows the countries where a timber or textile industry never took shape.

Important: Non-food raw materials: food and beverages do not enter. Timber is counted rough — sawn wood and furniture belong to manufactured exports.
