About the indicator

The share of electricity generated from coal, gas, oil and other kinds of fossil fuel. The main figure in any discussion of the energy transition: the shares of individual fuels change places without any transition at all — gas displaces coal, leaving generation just as fuel-based — while the sum falls only when fuel is genuinely replaced. Worldwide this share held near sixty percent for almost three decades and has been falling noticeably only in the last few years.

Important: Coal, gas, oil and other fuels together; separately they are available as World Bank series with broader coverage. Aggregates are weighted by generation and computed from 2000 onward.
