About the indicator

Electricity consumption per resident, in megawatt-hours a year. One of the most telling indicators of living standards and of the structure of an economy: the gap between the extreme countries is more than two hundredfold. But it has to be read with climate and industry in mind — the top of the list holds not only rich countries but also Iceland and Norway with their aluminum smelters running on cheap hydropower, and the Gulf states, where more goes on air conditioning than on heating in Europe.

Important: It is calculated on a country's entire consumption, including industry, and not on households alone. The series starts in 2000.
