About the indicator

Gross electricity generation from all sources over the year, in terawatt-hours. One terawatt-hour is a billion kilowatt-hours, roughly the annual consumption of three hundred thousand European households. The indicator answers the question of scale, while the shares of sources answer the question of composition, and the two should not be confused: France has a higher nuclear share than the United States, yet generates half as much electricity at nuclear plants. This is the series that serves as the weight when world and regional source shares are computed: percentages cannot be added up without it.

Important: Gross generation, before deducting the plants' own use and network losses; demand is therefore lower than generation by the amount of the losses, with an adjustment for imports. The series starts in 2000.
