About the indicator

The share of electricity from sources that emit nothing while they operate: all renewables together with nuclear generation. Ember calls such generation clean, and it is also described as low-carbon; the grouping is made on a single feature — the absence of carbon dioxide emissions per kilowatt-hour — and it has no bearing on any other property of nuclear power. The indicator is useful precisely because it does not depend on the choice between the two ways of doing without fuel: a country with a large nuclear program and a country with hydropower end up side by side.

Important: Renewables and nuclear together, on the criterion of no emissions while operating. It complements the fossil fuel share: together they come to about one hundred percent. Aggregates are weighted by generation and computed from 2000 onward.
