About the indicator

Transfers of major conventional weapons expressed in SIPRI trend-indicator values (TIV) in constant 1990 prices. TIV reflects the military capability of the equipment transferred rather than the price of the contract: deals of equal value can give different TIV, and secondhand equipment is valued below new.

Important: TIV cannot be read as the monetary value of the transfers — it is an indicator of the volume of military capability handed over.
