About the indicator

The number of passenger cars with an internal combustion engine sold over the year, ordinary hybrids without charging included. The series is useful precisely in a pair with electric car sales: the two together give the whole market, and their movement shows whether substitution is under way or electric cars are so far simply adding to the earlier volume. The world peak in sales of internal combustion cars has passed, and the series has been falling since.

Important: Together with electric car sales it makes up the entire passenger car market: the IEA has no separate series for total sales, and it is obtained by adding these two.
