About the indicator

The number of electric cars in use — the accumulated stock, not sales for the year. The difference between a stock and a flow is fundamental here: the share of electric cars in sales can be above half while their share of the stock stays small, because cars serve for some fifteen years and the fleet turns over slowly. It is this series, not sales, that shows when the transition will begin to tell on fuel consumption.

Important: A stock, not a flow: it cannot be compared with sales for the year directly. The stock is smaller than the sum of sales in past years — some of the cars have already been retired.
