About the indicator

The number of electric passenger cars sold over the year, per International Energy Agency data. The concept covers both fully electric cars and hybrids that can be charged from the grid; ordinary hybrids without charging are left out. The growth of this series is among the fastest in the whole of the statistics: over ten years sales have risen roughly a hundredfold, and more than half of the world total is China.

Important: The IEA tracks about sixty of the largest markets, which together account for nearly the entire world total. In the remaining countries sales are not zero but are negligibly small, so aggregates are computed at a lowered coverage threshold.
