About the indicator

Imports of services: what residents spend on foreign transport, travel, insurance, business and computer services. A large and inconspicuous item: the spending of a country's own tourists abroad is counted here, so countries with well-off populations and a short holiday season have large service imports even when merchandise trade is weak. For many countries the difference between exports and imports of services flips the sign of a trade balance computed on goods alone.

Important: The trips of a country's own citizens abroad are part of service imports, not a separate item. It excludes compensation paid to foreign workers and investment income.
