About the indicator

Exports of services: travel and tourism, transport, communications, insurance, financial and business services, royalties, computer and information services. For dozens of countries this flow is larger than merchandise exports, and not only for the obvious tourist destinations: India, Ireland and the Philippines ended up near the top of the list on software and business services. Services, unlike goods, do not pass through customs, so they are estimated from banking and survey statistics and are measured less precisely.

Important: It serves as the denominator for the share of ICT services in service exports. It excludes investment income and compensation of employees — those are counted separately, in the primary income account.
