Exports of research-intensive products: aerospace equipment, computers, pharmaceuticals, scientific instruments, electrical machinery. The classification rests on the share of research spending in the value of an industry's output rather than on the sophistication of the item — which is why pharmaceuticals make the list and, say, automobile manufacturing does not.
Important: It is measured by the value of the goods crossing the border, not by the value added inside the country. For countries that assemble electronics from imported parts the figure is well above their actual contribution.
