About the indicator

The number of children who died before the age of one per 1,000 live births in the same year. One of the most sensitive indicators of the quality of health care and of social conditions: it responds to the availability of obstetric care, vaccination, clean water and nutrition faster than life expectancy does. The estimates are prepared by the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME).
