The expected number of years of life in full health at birth — the HALE indicator in WHO terminology. Years spent with illness or limitation enter the calculation with a reduced weight depending on the severity of the condition, so HALE is always lower than ordinary life expectancy. The difference between them is the expected time of life with health lost: in most countries it is about ten years, and as life expectancy grows the difference grows too rather than shrinking.
Important: This series is not in the World Development Indicators — only at WHO. The severity weights of conditions are taken as common to all countries, so the differences reflect the prevalence of diseases and not how a country regards disability.
