About the indicator

The share of firms whose top management position is held by a woman, from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys. The surveys cover the formal private sector, so the indicator does not see small informal business, where the share of women is usually higher. Its level is weakly related to the income of a country and noticeably related to industry structure: where trade and services prevail, more firms are headed by women.

Important: The aggregate is a simple average across countries: the correct weight would be the number of firms, and the source does not publish it. The surveys are run once every few years and not annually in every country.
