About the indicator

The World Bank Human Capital Index: the expected productivity of a child born today by the time they enter working age — as a fraction of the productivity they would reach with complete education and full health. A value of 0.5 means the child realizes half of what is possible, and half is lost to poor schooling and to illness. The index is assembled from survival to age five, expected years of schooling adjusted for test scores, the share of children who are not stunted, and adult survival.

Important: The aggregate for country groups is weighted by the number of children rather than by the whole population: the index refers to those born today. Values are released once every few years rather than annually.
