The Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index: a composite score of how corrupt experts and businesspeople consider the public sector of a country to be. Zero means an utterly corrupt sector, one hundred an utterly clean one. The key word in the name is perceptions: the index is assembled from a dozen surveys and expert assessments rather than from the number of cases or convictions, because corruption itself cannot be measured directly, and its recording depends on the work of the very institutions being assessed.
Important: The methodology changed in 2012, so values before and after are not comparable; the series here starts in 2012. Small changes of the score between years usually lie within the margin of error — Transparency International itself asks that the multi-year trend be looked at.
