The number of hospital beds, including beds in public, private, general and specialized inpatient facilities and rehabilitation centers, per 1,000 people. The indicator is declining in many advanced countries not because their systems are degrading but because of the shift to day hospitals and outpatient treatment — yet it is the very thing that turned out to be the binding constraint in the COVID-19 pandemic.
