About the indicator

Government spending on health in current US dollars per person. Of all the spending indicators this one separates countries the most: the gap between the top and the bottom of the table exceeds a factor of a thousand, whereas by share of GDP it is rarely more than fivefold. The reason is simple — the share is taken from economies of very different size.

Important: Converted at the market exchange rate rather than by purchasing power: the real volume of medical care one dollar buys in low-income countries is markedly larger, so the gap in the table overstates the gap in services.
