About the indicator

The share of energy from renewable sources in total final energy consumption — not in electricity alone, but in heating and transport as well. High values in low-income countries are often explained not by “green” energy but by the traditional use of wood fuel for cooking.

Important: There is no aggregate for groups of countries: the correct denominator is final energy consumption itself, and that is published by the Energy Institute, whose terms prohibit republication. Weighting by population would be especially wrong here — in the poorest countries the renewable share is high because of firewood, and the world figure would come out overstated.
