About the indicator

Primary energy consumption is all the energy a country used over the year: coal, oil, gas, nuclear and renewable energy brought to a common unit. “Primary” means energy in the form in which it is taken from nature, before losses in conversion and transmission; electricity enters it not as a separate line but through the fuel it was generated from. The unit is the quadrillion British thermal units, customary in American statistics: one such unit is roughly equal to 25 million tonnes of oil equivalent.

Important: The figure is broader than electricity: electricity is only part of the final use of this energy, and transport and heating are included in it as well. This is the series that serves as the weight when the energy intensity aggregates are computed.
