About the indicator

All the primary energy produced inside a country: the fuel extracted plus output from nuclear, hydro and other plants. Setting it against consumption gives what neither of the two series shows on its own — energy self-sufficiency: a country whose production exceeds its consumption is an energy exporter, and the other way round. The largest exporters and the largest importers nonetheless often sit next to each other at the top of the list on both indicators, because the size of an economy matters more than the sign of the balance.

Important: The comparison with consumption shows a country's self-sufficiency: production above consumption means energy exports, below it, dependence on imports.
