About the indicator

Production of coal of all grades over the year, converted to millions of tonnes of oil equivalent. The conversion is needed because grades of coal differ in heat content by almost a factor of two: a tonne of anthracite and a tonne of lignite are different amounts of energy, and adding them up in tonnes overstates the contribution of countries that mine brown coal. World production is concentrated in a handful of countries: China accounts for about half, and together with India, Indonesia, the United States and Australia it makes up more than four-fifths.

Important: In oil equivalent rather than in tonnes: grades of coal differ in heat content by almost a factor of two, and a sum in tonnes would overstate brown coal production. All grades together, from anthracite to lignite.
