About the indicator

Methane emissions converted into carbon dioxide equivalent using the 100-year global warming potential. Methane accounts for about a fifth of the warming observed, and its sources are entirely different from those of CO2: livestock, rice paddies, landfills, and leaks in gas and oil production. The key difference is the timescale — methane stays in the atmosphere for about twelve years, against centuries for CO2, so cutting its emissions gives a visible effect within a decade.

Important: The conversion into CO2 equivalent depends on the horizon chosen: over twenty years methane weighs about three times more than over a hundred. The standard hundred-year horizon is used here, as in reporting under the Paris Agreement.
