About the indicator

The share of electricity from all renewable sources: hydro, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and tidal plants. It differs fundamentally from the indicator for renewables excluding hydro, and the difference explains most of the puzzlement such rankings cause: with hydro included, the top of the list holds countries whose renewable share has always been high — Norway, Paraguay, Nepal — while excluding hydro shows those that rebuilt their generation over the past twenty years.

Important: Hydro is included. The series without hydro is Renewables excluding hydro; it comes from the World Bank and covers more territories. Aggregates are weighted by generation and computed from 2000 onward.
