About the indicator

The share of electricity generated from natural gas. Gas generation holds a particular place in the power system: it emits half as much per kilowatt-hour as coal generation and, unlike sun and wind, switches on when called — which is why it is described both as a transition fuel and as a backup for renewables. The largest shares are in countries with production of their own and in those that replaced coal with gas.

Important: Aggregates are weighted by generation in terawatt-hours, as with the other generation shares, and are computed from 2000 onward — there is no weight series before that.
