About the indicator

Government expenditure on education as a percentage of total government expenditure. Unlike the share of GDP, it shows the priority within the budget: a country may spend little on education as a percentage of GDP, yet with a small state that turns out to be a significant part of all expenditure. The international benchmark agreed under the Dakar Framework for Action is fifteen to twenty percent of the budget.

Important: The aggregate is weighted by government consumption in dollars: it accounts for about two thirds of all budget expenditure, and the source does not publish absolute spending. The same device is used for military expenditure in the budget.
