About the indicator

Gross national income per capita calculated by the World Bank Atlas method, which smooths the exchange rate over three years. It differs from GDP in counting the primary income residents receive from abroad and in deducting the income paid to non-residents. It is by this indicator that the World Bank assigns countries each year to the high-, middle- and low-income groups.

Important: The aggregate for a group is all of its income over all of its population, not an average of country values. It is by this indicator that the World Bank divides countries into income groups.
