The estimate is built by UNAIDS from sentinel surveillance data, population surveys and treatment registers, so this is not the number of people diagnosed but the calculated number of carriers: some of them do not know their status. Absolute numbers and the share of the population diverge widely — the countries largest by number of carriers and the countries with the highest prevalence barely overlap.
Important: An estimate, not a count. UNAIDS attaches an uncertainty interval to every value, sometimes a wide one; the central estimate is taken here.
