About the indicator

The estimated number of people of all ages living with HIV at the end of the year. The estimate is built by UNAIDS from sentinel surveillance data, population surveys and treatment registers, so this is not the number of people diagnosed but the calculated number of carriers: some of them do not know their status. Absolute numbers and the share of the population diverge widely — the countries largest by number of carriers and the countries with the highest prevalence barely overlap.

Important: An estimate, not a count. UNAIDS attaches an uncertainty interval to every value, sometimes a wide one; the central estimate is taken here.
