About the indicator

The male population of a country as of mid-year. The series follows the World Population Prospects revisions of the UN and is compiled on the de facto definition of population, so it may diverge from national statistics that use the concept of resident population. Together with the female population it gives the sex structure, and that structure differs markedly: from a pronounced male surplus in the Gulf states with their labor migration to a female surplus where male mortality is high.

Important: The sum of the male and the female population matches total population — the UN reconciles them to a single total. For comparing countries the share is more useful than the absolute number: it says more about the structure of the population than size does.
