About the indicator

The share of electric cars in sales of new passenger cars over the year. The indicator separates countries more sharply than absolute sales do: by count the large markets are in front, while by share it is Norway, where electric cars have taken almost the whole market for new cars, and the other countries of Northern Europe. It is the share, not the count, that shows how far a country has come through the transition — and how soon it will reach its fleet as a whole.

Important: Aggregates for groups of countries are not computed: the correct denominator is every car sold, and the source has no such series. Weighting by sales of internal combustion cars will not do — the leading countries have almost none of them left, and it is precisely they that would pull the world share down.
