About the indicator

The share of tourism in the gross domestic product of a country — the direct contribution of the industry, without indirect effects through suppliers. The indicator differs from the share of tourism in exports in that it counts domestic tourism as well: a country with a large internal travel market can have a noticeable contribution of the industry to GDP alongside modest foreign currency receipts. The highest values come from island states, where tourism is the foundation of the economy and the main reason for its vulnerability: the pandemic of 2020 brought their GDP down harder than anywhere else.

Important: The direct contribution, without the multiplier. The estimates are built on tourism satellite accounts, which not all countries maintain, so coverage is narrower than for arrivals and receipts.
