The number of deaths attributed to unsafe water, the absence of sanitation and insufficient hygiene, per 100,000 people. The bulk of them are diarrheal diseases in children under five, so the indicator is closely tied to child mortality and goes almost to zero where the task of water supply and sewerage has been solved. This is one of the few causes of death that is removed not by medicine but by construction.
Important: A calculation from burden of disease models. In countries with universal access to water and sanitation the value is close to zero, so the spread between countries runs to a factor of hundreds.
