About the indicator

The share of deaths from injuries and other external causes in the total number of deaths during a year. This takes in road accidents, falls, drownings, poisonings, homicides and suicides — everything that is not a disease. This share depends little on the level of income but strongly on age structure: external causes kill predominantly the young, so in countries with a young population their contribution is noticeably higher even at the same safety of the environment.

Important: There are no aggregates by country group: a weight by the total number of deaths is needed, and we do not have it. The only one of the three groups where the large part is played not by medicine but by the environment: roads, rules, weapons and alcohol.
