About the indicator

The share of deaths from infectious diseases, and also from conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth and from undernutrition, in the total number of deaths during a year. The group is brought together for a reason: all these causes retreat roughly at the same time as incomes rise and health care develops, and their combined share serves as one of the clearest measures of the stage of the epidemiological transition a country is at. The spread is enormous: from a few percent in Europe to half of all deaths in the poorest countries of Africa.

Important: There are no aggregates by country group: a weight by the total number of deaths is needed, and we do not have it. The group takes in not only infections but also maternal mortality and undernutrition, so the share is higher than one might expect from infectious diseases alone.
