About the indicator

The estimated number of people killed in road traffic accidents during a year. In absolute numbers the picture is set by the size of the country and of its vehicle fleet: more than half of the world's road deaths occur in a dozen of the most populous states. The world total holds at around 1.2 million people a year — that makes roads one of the leading causes of death among young people.

Important: A single-year snapshot from the WHO report on road safety rather than an annual series: the reports come out once every few years. For the trend, the death rate per 100,000 people serves better.
