About the indicator

The number of people killed in road traffic accidents per 100,000 people per year, as estimated by WHO. An estimate, not the sum of police reports: in many countries only deaths at the scene enter the statistics while those who die in hospital later do not, and WHO brings the data to a single thirty-day rule. The spread between countries reaches tenfold and is determined not so much by the number of cars as by the state of the roads, the rules and compliance with them.

Important: It is calculated per population, not per number of cars or kilometers driven. By risk per kilometer the order of countries is different: in countries with a small vehicle fleet there are more accidents for every car.
