About the indicator

The number of deaths from unintentional poisoning per 100,000 people per year. The word “unintentional” is the key one here: deliberate poisonings belong to suicides and are counted in another indicator. The group takes in poisoning by alcohol and its surrogates, by medicines, household chemicals and carbon monoxide, and this composition differs strongly between countries — in some alcohol prevails, in others heating with coal in closed rooms.

Important: Unintentional poisonings only. Deliberate ones are counted in the suicide mortality rate, so the two indicators cannot be added.
