About the indicator

The number of deaths attributed to air pollution age-standardized, per 100,000 people. Both outdoor pollution and pollution inside dwellings are counted — from cooking and heating with solid fuel, which in the poorest countries contributes the bulk of it. The mechanism is not a direct one: dirty air does not appear as the cause of death on the certificate but raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, lung cancer and respiratory disease, and the indicator estimates the contribution of that risk.

Important: A calculation from burden of disease models rather than a count of cases. Standardization by age removes the effect of populations being of different ages — which is why the values cannot be converted into a number of deaths by multiplying by population.
