About the indicator

The probability of death between the ages of 15 and 60 for men, expressed as the number of deaths per thousand fifteen-year-olds. The indicator picks out what happens in working ages more precisely than life expectancy does: life expectancy depends heavily on child mortality, and this series does not account for it at all. It is this series that shows the excess male mortality in the countries of Eastern Europe, where the values run three times the Western European ones.

Important: Not an annual rate but a probability over 45 years of life, computed from current age-specific rates. Child and old-age mortality are not part of it.
